Mangotsfield Primary put Basa to the Test

Young’s trial Basa in a South Gloucestershire Primary School.
Give children a piece of plain white fish and many wouldn’t eat it. Give it an imaginative, yet healthy twist and the results are astonishing!

In line with the government guidelines on school meals, UK schools are being encouraged to serve fish at least once or twice a week, but is it really that easy to introduce healthier options? We went to Mangotsfield Primary School in South Gloucestershire, which caters for more than 170 children each day, to see if Basa held the answer...

Cooking Up a Storm
Chris Keld, Unit Manager at Mangotsfield Primary School cooked up a selection of eight dishes to tempt the taste buds of eight hungry children. He used a combination of Young’s recipes developed especially for schools with an independent nutritionist/chef, as well as a few of his own. The recipes all worked around the Young’s Basa 60g portion which is a great size for children up to 11 years old and so perfect for Mangotsfield.

What did the children think?
So what did the children think of the recipes? The favourites included the Kedgeree, Basa topped with Cheese & Onion and the Tempura battered Basa (one of Chris’ own), which was described by nine year old Georgina Northall as “better than fish and chip shop fish”. While Jake Horsnell, aged eight, would love to see the “scrumptious” kedgeree on the school menu or the Basa Fish Pie, as he loved the potato topping.

Top Marks for Basa
Patrick Mulligan from Young’s, who set-up the trial at Mangotsfield, summed up the day “Chris did a fabulous job with all the recipes, as testified by all the empty plates! I also think the nutritional and sustainability message is very important to the school, with their emphasis on responsible sourcing. Basa has everything going for it - it’s really great to be able to offer a product that meets the needs of schools so well and that the children clearly love! In fact the controlling local authority has taken onboard the appropriate products from the Young’s Basa range for all of the schools, which is in excess of 140.”
