As part of its drive to increase the range and availability of natural fish in the freezer, Young’s has launched Cornish Sardines - caught to order by one of Cornwall’s most respected fishermen.
The sardines are fished by Stefan Glinksi, owner and skipper of The Pride of Cornwall, based in Newlyn. This boat is certified under the Responsible Fisheries Scheme (run by industry body, Seafish) for the quality of its approach, application of best practice and environmental considerations. Caught using traditional ring and drift net techniques from Cornish inshore waters, the sardines are landed fresh within two hours of catch, then headed, gutted and fast frozen within 12 hours. Since the best fish – with the highest oil content – are caught between October and January, Young’s lays down sardines caught during this period to enable year-round supply of the finest quality product.
Mike Parker, deputy CEO of Young’s, says, “Cornish sardines highlight the point that delicious, top quality species are readily available from our own waters – caught by smaller producers using traditional methods and a responsible approach. We are delighted to have been able to work with Stefan and his team to make such fantastic fish available nationally, all year round.”
Young’s Cornish Sardines are an excellent source of Omega 3 and a perfect choice for simple summer fish dishes and barbecuing. They can be grilled direct from the freezer in under 20 minutes.
The product is now nationally available in Iceland, RRP is £2.99 for a 500g pack.
