Young’s was this week presented with one of the UK fish industry’s most prestigious accolades - the Seafish Award for Outstanding Achievement - in a gala ceremony held in London on Thursday. It was a highly successful night for Young’s, which also took two other prizes.
In making the award, Seafish said: “Young's has shown real vision and commitment to the future of the industry through close involvement with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) from the earliest days, by investing in research and by setting innovative sustainability standards. The integrity of Young’s operations has been acknowledged by conservation groups and its influence on the rest of the industry has been enormous. In a commercial world where big is not always beautiful, this organisation has shown how influence can be exercised responsibly.”
The annual Seafood Awards are the industry’s premier awards event, intended to encourage enterprise and innovation in all sectors of the seafood industry, from fishermen through to processors and retailers.
Wynne Griffiths, Young’s chief executive, said, “We are absolutely delighted to have received this award, which is powerful recognition of all our hard work in recent years to boost sales of fish whilst at the same time driving for long term industry improvement in terms of responsible fisheries.”
Young's also won the highly prized 'best product' award - Best Oil Rich Fish product, for its Sainsbury's brand Be Good to Yourself ‘Mackerel Strips in Oat Breadcrumbs’.
In the training section of the awards, Denise Johnstone of Young's Annan won the processing and manufacturing category for her 'incredible drive and self-belief' in the development of her role as the site's Training Co-ordinator.
