Young’s continues to flourish in the 21st century.
In July 1999, Young’s merged with own label specialist, Bluecrest Seafood - firmly establishing the new Young’s Bluecrest business as one of Europe’s leading specialist seafood companies. Then in November 2000, the Young’s brand was re-launched with new products, improved packaging, and a £5m advertising campaign, encouraging everyone to ‘Make fish the dish of the day!’ This helped grow sales rapidly - Young’s brand value increasing from just over £90M in 2000 to over £215M by the time it celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2005.
A number of acquisitions also expanded the business - including Albert Fisher in 2002 and Pinegain in 2003. In 2004, Young’s acquired The Macrae Food Group, a specialist in chilled ready to eat seafood products based inScotland. In 2007 it also acquired the Seafood Company - comprised of Anchor Seafoods and the Cromer Crab Company.
By the end of 2007 Young’s was firmly established as one of Europe’s most important specialist fish companies, with around 5000 employees and 11 sites across the UK. In January 2008, a restructuring saw Young’s reorganized as part of the Foodvest Group. Formerly the holding company for Young’s in the UK and Findus in Scandinavia and France, Foodvest became the parent company for these businesses, making it one of Europe’s leading fish and frozen food companies, with a turnover in excess of £1BN.
In 2008, Foodvest was purchased by private equity firm, Lion Capital. In May 2009, Foodvest was renamed the Findus Group.
Today, Young’s is focused on frozen branded seafood, complemented by its sister business, The Seafood Company (which specialises in chilled fish for supermarket own label). Young’s continues to build on its heritage, leading the market with exciting new ways to help people enjoy more fish. Sales growth in 2009 is running at more than 20% and in March 2009 Young’s Frozen Fish was identified as one of Britain’s best-performing brands by respected industry magazine, The Grocer.
Elizabeth Young would be proud of the company that still bears her name! |
